Something stands at the edge of the trees. Too tall. Too thin. A dark suit, long arms, a pale head with no face. It does not chase you. It waits. Every time you look away, it is closer.
The Pale Watcher
- Appears rarely at night, alone, in forests and taiga. Only one haunts an area at a time.
- Look at it and it freezes, twitching. Stare too long and the static gets in: your vision swims, then it is gone. Sometimes it leaves a page behind.
- Look away and it moves. A burst of static, and it stands somewhere behind you, nearer than before.
- Close by, the dark closes in: darkness, then blindness, and a hiss of static in the air. If it reaches you unseen, it touches you. That hurts. Then it withdraws, for a while.
- At dawn it slips away when no one is watching. Name it with a name tag and it stays.
- 60 health, fire immune, no knockback. It fights back if struck. Drops Shade Cloth and sometimes Torn Pages.
Things it leaves
- Torn Page: dropped by the Watcher, or left behind when you stare it down. Use it to read what someone wrote before you.
- Shade Cloth: a scrap of its suit. Dropped when it dies.
- Watcher's Ledger: 4 Torn Pages and 1 Shade Cloth, crafted together in any shape. Use it to learn how far the nearest Watcher is, and in which direction.
Keeping it away
- Ward Lantern: a Lantern in the middle, an Amethyst Shard above it, and Iron Nuggets on both sides of each (top row nugget, shard, nugget; second row nugget, lantern, nugget). Hold it in either hand. If the Watcher comes within 16 blocks, the lantern drives it far back and spares you the darkness. Each push wears the lantern; it holds 24. Repair it with Amethyst Shards.
Tips
- Do not stare. Do not turn your back. Glance, then move.
- Leaves and walls hide it from you. They do not hide you from it.
- Carry the lantern in your off hand before you enter a dark forest.
Scary, not gory. Needs Bedrock 1.26 or newer.
