Field journal, day one: the valley is alive! Five dinosaurs roam the overworld again, each with its own model, walk, idle and attack animations. Crack open Fossil Stone, rebuild their eggs and raise your very own herd. Grab a pickaxe, explorer, there is digging to do!
The dinosaurs
- Thornjaw Rex (hostile, 40 hearts, hits for 10): the rare king of the jungle. It hunts players and wild plant eaters. Drops lots of Raw Dino Meat, Dino Bones, Dino Scales and sometimes a Rex Tooth.
- Swiftclaw Raptor (hostile, 10 hearts): packs of 2 to 4 in jungles and savannas that leap at their prey. Feed one Raw Dino Meat to tame it (1 in 4 chance per piece). A tamed raptor follows you, sits on command, guards you and breeds with Raw Dino Meat.
- Trihorn (neutral, 25 hearts): herds in plains and savannas. Leave it alone and it grazes; hit one and the whole herd charges. Tame it with Sweet Berries, put a Dino Saddle on it and ride! Breeds with Wheat.
- Canopy Longneck (passive, 50 hearts): a gentle giant of savannas and jungles. Tame it with Melon Slices, saddle it and two players can ride high above the treetops. Breeds with Apples.
- Cliffwing (neutral flyer, 8 hearts): soars over mountains, peaks and beaches and pecks back if you bother it. Drops feathers and meat.
Fossils and eggs
- Fossil Stone hides underground in every overworld biome, and higher up in deserts and badlands. Mine it for 1 to 2 Fossil Fragments and sometimes a Dino Bone.
- Craft an egg (shapeless): 4 Fossil Fragments + an Egg + Flint for a Swiftclaw Raptor Egg, + Wheat for a Trihorn Egg, + a Vine for a Canopy Longneck Egg, + a Feather for a Cliffwing Egg. The Thornjaw Rex Egg needs 6 Fossil Fragments + an Egg + 2 Dino Bones.
- Place the egg on the ground. It wobbles, and after a few minutes a baby hatches! Hatchlings never attack and never wander off for good. Babies grow up in about 20 minutes (feed them to speed it up). Break an egg to pick it back up.
Food, gear and crafting
- Raw Dino Meat: restores 3 hunger, with a small chance of Hunger. Cook it in a furnace, smoker or campfire into a Dino Steak (9 hunger, great saturation).
- Dino Saddle: 3 Leather on top, then Dino Scale, Iron Ingot, Dino Scale below. Use it on a tamed Trihorn or Longneck, use Shears to take it off.
- Bone Club: 2 Dino Bones above a Stick (6 damage, 320 uses).
- Rextooth Blade: Rex Tooth, Dino Scale and Dino Bone stacked in a column (8 damage, 1100 uses).
- Spare Dino Bones turn into 5 Bone Meal each.
Explorer tips: bring a shield into the jungle, the Rex hits hard but turns slowly. Raise raptors from eggs for a loyal pack without the bites. A saddled Longneck makes a fantastic lookout tower on legs. Happy hunting!
