How to Make a Custom Sword or Pickaxe in Minecraft Bedrock with Its Own Damage and Durability

Custom weapons and tools are the most popular thing people build in GodCraft, and for good reason: one item with its own texture and stats instantly makes a world feel different. The hard part isn't making the item. It's getting the numbers right so your sword isn't useless or wildly overpowered. This guide covers both.

Open the tool editor

1. Open your add-on (or create one from the + button in the Workbench tab).
2. Tap Items, Entities, ... to get to your objects, then Add Object.
3. Go to Items > Custom > Custom Tool.

If you want a quick start instead, the Ready to use button on the Objects screen has premade tool and weapon sets you can add and then edit.

Texture, name and tool type

1. Tap the Texture field to draw the icon in Paint 2D or load one from Gallery, Files or the built-in library (Select). Tool icons are 16x16, like vanilla.
2. Enter a Name, such as "Ruby Sword". The identifier fills in on its own.
3. Pick the Tool Type: Sword, Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, Hoe, Shears or Spear.

The tool type matters more than it looks. It sets the enchantment slot (so a sword gets Sharpness and a pickaxe gets Efficiency and Fortune) and decides whether the item mines blocks at all. Swords and spears are treated as weapons; the others get mining settings.

A tip from experience: draw the blade going from bottom-left to top-right, like vanilla tools. If you turn on Hand Equipped under Basic Properties, the item is held the way tools are, and a diagonal drawing looks right in the hand.

Durability and damage

Open Durability & Combat.

• Durability is the number of uses before the item breaks. For reference, vanilla iron tools last about 250 uses, diamond about 1,560, and netherite just over 2,000. Gold is famously fragile at around 30.
• Damage is the attack damage of the item, from 0 to 50.

Rather than guessing damage, compare it in game. Hover a vanilla sword in your inventory and you'll see its attack damage in the tooltip; your custom sword shows its own value in the same place. A good test is a zombie, which has 20 health (ten hearts): count how many hits your sword needs compared with a diamond sword. If your "early game" ruby sword kills faster than diamond, lower it.

Also set Stack Size to 1 in Basic Properties. Stackable swords are a common beginner mistake and look strange in the inventory.

Mining settings for pickaxes, axes and shovels

For tools, the Mining Properties section appears:

• Destroy Speed is how fast it breaks the blocks it's meant for. The hint gives the vanilla scale: iron is 6, diamond is 8.
• Digger Component with Target Blocks lists exactly which blocks get that speed. Use Add Blocks to choose them, for example stone, ores and deepslate for a pickaxe.
• Digger Speed is the speed applied to those target blocks.

Leave a block out of the list and the tool breaks it at bare-hand speed, which is the usual reason a custom pickaxe "doesn't work" on some blocks.

Enchanting and repairing

• Turn on Enchantable, check the Enchantment Slot, and set Enchantability. Higher numbers give better enchantments from the enchanting table.
• Turn on Repairable and use Add Items to choose what fixes it on an anvil. For a ruby sword, your own ruby item is the obvious pick.

Give it a recipe

Add a crafting recipe from Add Object > Recipes > Crafting Recipe. Use Shaped and copy the vanilla sword pattern: two of your material stacked above a stick. Players will guess it without being told, which is exactly what you want.

Test it

1. Tap Save in the tool editor, then save the add-on.
2. In Workbench, tap Install and open it with Minecraft.
3. Activate the packs on a test world with cheats on and use the /give command shown under the identifier in the editor.

Common problems

• The pickaxe is slow on some blocks: those blocks are missing from Target Blocks. Add them and reinstall.
• Durability bar never moves: make sure Durability is set and the item isn't stackable.
• No enchantments at the table: Enchantable is off, or the enchantability is very low.
• Icon looks huge or tiny in hand: toggle Hand Equipped and test both.

Our rule of thumb for balance: decide which vanilla tier your tool belongs to, copy that tier's numbers, then change just one thing to make it special. A ruby sword with diamond damage but extra durability is interesting. One with double everything is just a cheat item.
